Client Project: Cal Athletics at UC Berkeley

The Situation: Celebrating the 125th anniversary of the “Big Game” between Cal and their long-time rival Stanford. Cal Athletics Marketing wanted to create a miniature replica of the Axe trophy that passes between the two teams, depending on whoever has won the most recent game.
The Challenge: Creating a completely custom piece that accurately represented the trophy, but still fit within production parameters, could be produced in time for the game, and without breaking the budget. On top of that, the customer wanted recipients to be able to display either the winning team from that year’s game or their team of choice.

The Solution: We partnered with one of our suppliers to determine the best materials, design, and details to execute the customer’s vision. We simplified some details, while creating a replica that clearly reflected the original trophy. We came up with a reversible magnetic plate to display the name of either Cal or Stanford, so the end users could choose which school’s name to display on the trophy, depending on their allegiance.
Result: Pre-production samples were so popular, that both schools increased the order size for this one-of-a-kind collectible replica. It was a huge hit as a game day giveaway, and even Cal team members were seen showing them off on live TV after winning the game.
